The 2024 Birmingham Classic will run from June 17th to 23rd, and prize money details have been revealed.
This is one of three grass-court tournaments being held in the UK this month, and it is part of the WTA 250 series. This event is an intermediary to Wimbledon and will give the women competing a chance to transition from clay to grass seamlessly.
Tennis fans already know what to expect in terms of quality and matchups, with three Grand Slam champions on the entry list. These are Jelena Ostapenko, Barbora Krejcikova and Elise Mertens.
There is a mix of veterans and exciting young talent. These are Karolina Pliskova, Lesia Tsurenko, Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider. British interest will be centered on Katie Boulter, the lone home player on the initial entry list.
Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic will use a special ranking to play. China's Yue Yuan was among the most consistent performers on hard courts in the first half of the season, while Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva excelled on clay. It will be interesting to see if they will carry that form on grass.
The 32-player singles field in Birmingham will compete for $267,082 from the total prize money. The breakdown in prize money and points distribution will begin in the first round and continue until the final.
Players who exit the tournament in the first round will earn $2,890 but receive 1 point. Those who reach the second round will be rewarded $4,040 and receive 30 points.
Quarterfinalists will earn $6,608 and receive 54 points, while semifinalists will earn $11,610 and be awarded 98 points. The two women contesting the 2024 Birmingham final will receive a larger fraction of the prize money.
