The 2023 Transylvania Open will run from October 16th to 22nd and will mark the final stop on the European continent in the 2023 WTA season.
It will be staged in Cluj-Napoca, Romania's second-most populous city, and over half of the WTA players have committed to play in the third edition of this tournament. The multi-purpose BTarena will be the home of the Transylvania Open.
Last year, the Transylvania Open was voted as the Best 250 Tournament of the Year, and the tournament organizers have worked their socks off to bring an even bigger pool of talent to compete at this year's tournament and will look to dedicate themselves to deliver a welcoming experience for all players.
So far, 23 of the 32 players in the singles field have been confirmed. Four players will receive wild cards (yet to be allocated), and four will join via the qualifiers. One player will enter the main draw with a special exemption.
The biggest draw is undoubtedly the reigning WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia. The Frenchwoman's chances of appearing in Cancun, Mexico to defend her title have diminished and will go all out to gain maximum points in Cluj-Napoca.
The top-seeded Garcia will be joined by two of the most improved performers in 2023, those being Donna Vekic (who defeated Garcia in the Monterrey final) and in-form Romanian Sorana Cirstea. The third seed isn't the only home player on the field.
Cirstea will have company, with Patricia Maria Tig, Ana Bogdan, and Jaqueline Cristian all expected to grace the courts of the BTarena in front of their fans. Ukrainian duo Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska will return to the event for another year. Former WTA No. 1 Karolina Pliskova will make her debut appearance.
There is also a blend of talented youngsters in the field. These include Germany's Eva Lys and Swiss teenager Celine Naef who are both making the transition from ITF to the main tour this season. Denmark's Clara Tauson has established herself in the world's Top 100 and is another precocious talent to watch.
The tournament's defending champion is Anna Blinkova, who clinched a maiden WTA title 12 months ago. The Russian doesn't feature in the initial entry list and intends to play the Asian swing during the close season as per her update after the US Open. In that case, we are guaranteed a new champion.
