The 2023 European Open will take place from October 16th to 22nd in Antwerp, Belgium and this year's entry list has been released.
It will be another seven-day spectacle of indoor hard-court tennis in Belgium's only ATP Tour event. With its great track record of welcoming the best players in the world, the tournament organizers took on the mantle to bring two of the world's Top 10 in this year's 28-man singles field.
Since its inception in 2016, the European Open has crowned a new champion each year. Last year's winner Felix Auger-Aliassime doesn't feature in this year's entry list, so we won't have a successful title defense for the sixth year in a row.
The top seed has been confirmed to be Stefanos Tsitsipas who will play in this tournament for the first time since 2017 when he reached the semifinal. Tsitsipas is looking to qualify for the ATP Finals, so this could be a very important tournament for him to inch closer to that goal.
Italy's Jannik Sinner is the other Top-10 player in the draw. The 22-year-old will have the chance to become the first multiple-winner of the European Open, having won it in 2021. He is one of three former winners in the field.
Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, one of the premier indoor hard courters will be the third seed, making his second visit after a semifinal finish in 2020. The likes of Jan-Lennard Struff, Borna Coric, and Alexander Bublik are among the Top 30 contenders that will be playing in Antwerp.
This is a crucial stretch for players outside the world's Top 30 to earn some valuable points and lift their ranking to be among the Top 32 seeds for next year's Australian Open rather than wait for the tuneup tournaments in January.
So young players such as Ugo Humbert (2020 champion), Arthur Fils, and Matteo Arnaldi could be rewarded enormously in terms of ranking points if they make the deep end of this tournament. One of the ATP's most improved players in 2023 is Yannick Hanfmann who is running out of time to crown his fine season with a title.
Inaugural champion of the European Open Richard Gasquet will make his seventh visit to Antwerp, the most of any player in the draw. At least three players will join as wild cards, while four will use the qualifying route to enter the main draw.
