The 2022 Italian Open will be held in Rome from May 9 to 15, with a packed entry list and the best players competing for the trophy in the season's second WTA 1000 event on clay.

The season's second WTA 1000 tournament on clay courts offers players the last opportunity to play against the best before heading to the French capital for the second major of the season - the Roland Garros.

Iga Swiatek is the defending champion at the 2022 Italian Open, having defeated Karolina Pliskova in the final last year. The Czech player, however, is also a former champion in Rome, having triumphed in 2019, and both are set to compete also this year.

The list of champions at the Italian Open is long and includes also Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina. The Romanian triumphed in 2020, while Svitolina triumphed twice in 2017 and 2018.

However, while Halep will try to add another title in 2022, the Ukrainian won't take part at the event this year, as she withdrew from both the Madrid Open as well as the Italian Open in Rome.

But there are also many players who have never lifted a trophy in Rome but will be looking to win their maiden title in the Italian capital. Paula Badosa, Barbora Krejcikova, Aryna Sabalenka, and Emma Raducanu are a few of those players who are capable of showing their skills on the big stage.

Naomi Osaka, who needed a wild card to enter the 2022 Madrid Open, will also take part in the event as she was eligible to enter the tournament in Rome without needing one.

The list of possible challengers for the title is long, and Italian wild cards will also try to make their way through the draw, hoping to use the support from the home crowd to their advantage, as Jasmine Paolini, Lucia Bronzetti, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto were all granted entry into the main draw.
