The 2024 World Tennis League organizers have made another controversial decision: They have placed Simona Halep on Nick Kyrgios's team despite the Australian's hardline stance about doping cases.
This year's edition of the World Tennis League will be played from December 19th until December 22nd. It is the most high-profile event held during the off-season, and many top players participate each year.
Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Ryakina, and Kyrgios are among the high-profile names who have committed to competing in Abu Dhabi, meaning fans will be treated to much great tennis.
The planned teams for the World Tennis League were announced a few weeks ago. However, Kyrgios' team, the Kites, has proved troublesome, and several changes have already been made.
Kyrgios was initially set to play alongside Stefanos Tsitisipas, Paula Badosa, and Jasmine Paolini. That would have created an interesting dynamic since Kyrgios and Tsitsipas had one of the most heated battles seen in recent years at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.
Although never confirmed, that might have been why Tsitsipas and Badosa were moved to another team. Badosa is the Greek's girlfriend, and it is evident the pair requested to be on the same team at the exhibition event.
Swiatek was announced as Badosa's replacement on Kyrgios' team. However, the Pole's one-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance trimetazidine became public the next day.
The four-time French Open champion did not receive a lengthy ban because she proved that the melatonin tablets she bought were contaminated with trimetazidine without her knowledge.
That fact has not stopped Kyrgios from taking a blunt stance against Swiatek, as he has with Jannik Sinner since his positive tests for the prohibited substance clostebol became public a few days before the US Open.
Kyrgios thinks any player who tests positive should receive a significant ban. The Australian also argues that players can claim they did not know what happened in doping cases and get away without a serious ban, something Eugenie Bouchard agreed with.
The claim that players can say they do not know what happened to avoid punishment does not seem factually accurate since Swiatek was initially provisionally suspended and only had it lifted because further testing proved her explanation.
Nonetheless, Kyrgios is always honest with his views. His feelings about Swiatek and Sinner's cases meant it was not surprising when the Pole was moved to the Eagles Team at the World Tennis League, containing Tsitsipas, Badosa, and now Alexander Shevchenko, who replaced Hubert Hurkacz.
Simona Halep, who received a nine-month ban after testing positive for a banned substance, is now on Kyrgios' team, alongside Paolini and Casper Ruud after replacing Barbora Krejcikova, who withdrew.
Halep's ban was initially four years before being reduced on appeal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. It will be interesting to see how Kyrgios reacts to having someone banned for doping on his team, considering what he said about Sinner and Swiatek.
Other replacements have also been made at the World Tennis League: Denis Shapovalov is in for Daniil Medvedev, and Jordan Thompson took Taylor Fritz's place.
