The
ATP's indoor hard-court swing begins on October 13th with three tournaments, one of which will be the 2025
Stockholm Open.
Unlike the European Open and Almaty Open, scheduled during the same week, the Stockholm Open is one of the ATP's oldest tournaments. Its maiden iteration in 1969 was won by Nikola Pilic, who passed away on September 22nd.
Roger Federer, recently
nominated for the International Tennis Hall of Fame, is one of the Stockholm Open's many former champions. It has been a 250-level tournament since 1995, after a spell at the 1000-level.
Tommy Paul is the defending champion. He defeated
Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-3 in the 2024 final by being relentlessly solid from the baseline, effectively moving his older opponent around the court in the rallies.
Paul and Dimitrov join other players like
Casper Ruud,
Matteo Berrettini,
Denis Shapovalov, and
Marin Cilic on the 2025 entry list. It is scheduled to be Dimitrov's first tournament appearance since retiring with an injury during his 2025 Wimbledon quarterfinal against Jannik Sinner.
The Stockholm Open has committed €706,850 in
prize money. Although not as lucrative as the financial rewards at Grand Slam, Masters 1000, and ATP 500 level, the amount should still motivate players enough to try hard.
This year's Stockholm Open champion will earn €107,490 and 250 ranking points. Paul's run to glory in 2024 included a semifinal victory against Stan Wawrinka, who reached that stage as a 39-year-old qualifier.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, David Ferrer, and John McEnroe have all been losing finalists in Sweden. The 2025 runner-up will receive €62,720 and 165 points for being the second-best player of the week.
Wawrinka and Tallon Griekspoor were 2024's defeated semifinalists. The two men who replicate that achievement at this year's edition are guaranteed to leave Stockholm with €36,870 and 100 points.
€21,365 and 50 ranking points will be awarded to the four eliminated quarterfinalists. That reduces to €12,405 and 25 points for those who fall in the round of 16 at the long-running ATP 250 tournament.
The Top four seeds receive byes to the round of 16, but the other 24 players in the draw must fight for their second-round spots. Those who fail in that quest will earn €7,580 but no ranking points.
Ruud still has an outside chance of qualifying for the 2025 ATP Finals. The Norwegian began the 2025 Shanghai Masters at No. 11 in the race, but Jack Draper at No. 9 is already out of the running after
ending his season early because of an arm injury.
If Ruud still has a decent chance after the Shanghai Masters, performing well in the Stockholm Open, the Vienna Open, and the Paris Masters will decide whether he qualifies for the event he was the runner-up at in 2022.
Berrettini is also one to watch. He made a slow start to his comeback from a spell out injured at the Hangzhou Open and the Japan Open, but that is not uncommon after a period on the sidelines.
