The 2025 Madrid Open will be the first of two WTA 1000 clay court tournaments, and the entry list for the women's singles has been unveiled.
This year's Madrid Open is scheduled to take place from April 22nd to May 4th. The WTA matches might draw even more attention than usual since the 2024 final was one of the most remarkable women's matches ever played.
Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka's battle for the title last year was of astounding quality from start to finish. After countless incredible rallies from both women, Swiatek saved three championship points before ultimately prevailing 7-5, 4-6, 7-6.
Sabalenka defeated her Polish rival in the 2023 Madrid Open final. She is one of only two players to have beaten Swiatek in a final played on clay. The other was Polona Hercog at the 2019 Ladies Open Lugano.
Unsurprisingly, Swiatek has committed to defending her Madrid Open title. The 23-year-old's outstanding clay court results since 2020 have established her as the best on the surface.
However, Swiatek is more vulnerable, in relative terms, in Madrid than other clay court tournaments since the surface is faster compared to other events, such as the Italian Open and French Open.
Last year's incredible triumph against Sabalenka was Swiatek's first Madrid Open title. By contrast, she has won the French Open four times and the Italian Open three times, dominating at those tournaments.
Unlike Swiatek, the Madrid Open is the only clay court event where Sabalenka has thrived. Both of her career titles on the dirt were in Madrid in 2021 and 2023. She has lost six other finals on clay.
Coco Gauff will compete for her first Madrid Open crown. The 2023 US Open champion's second WTA title came on clay at the Emilia-Romagna Open in May 2021, but she has not secured another on the surface since.
However, Gauff is actually among the best clay court players. She reached the 2022 French Open final, and her winning percentage of 72% on it is better than on hard and grass courts. The American would undoubtedly have won more without Swiatek's presence.
Teenage prodigy Mirra Andreeva will attempt to replicate or even better her incredible hard-court success in 2025 at the Madrid Open and throughout the clay-court swing. She won her maiden WTA 1000 titles at the 2025 Dubai Championships and 2025 Indian Wells Open.
Andreeva proved she is an all-court player at the 2024 French Open, reaching the semifinal. That included a victory against Sabalenka in the quarterfinal, although the world No. 1 struggled with an illness in that match.
Naomi Osaka is also on the Madrid Open WTA entry list. Although clay has not been a natural surface for her over the years, she produced an incredible performance at last year's French Open against Swiatek, agonizingly losing after holding a match point.
Petra Kvitova will continue her comeback to tennis in Madrid. She returned from maternity leave in the U.S. in Austin, Indian Wells, and Miami. The two-time Wimbledon winner did not win any matches at those tournaments, but her level was still promising.
Elena Rybakina, who was recently pictured with Stefano Vukov again, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, Paula Badosa, Qinwen Zheng, and Amanda Anisimova are some of the other players on the 2025 Madrid Open WTA entry list.
