The 2025
Chennai Open will be one of the three closing tournaments of this season, and the
prize money details for the event have been revealed.
The Chennai Open, also known as the Indian Open, is one of the tournaments that don't have a stable place in the
WTA calendar. There was an event held in Indian between 2003 and 2008, with 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams as one of the champions.
The Indian Open was first held in Hyderabad and then in Bengaluru. In 2022, India hosted a WTA event again, but this time, the tournament was held in Chennai. Although the Chennai Open didn't appear in the calendar in 2023 and 2024, it returns in 2025.
In the tournament's last edition in 2022,
Linda Fruhvirtova and
Magda Linette played the final, with the young Czech player winning her maiden career title. Both seemingly enjoyed the experience in Chennai, as they will return to the city again in 2025 when the tournament returns to the calendar.
Joining them will be the likes of
Donna Vekic and Janice Tjen, who is a rising talent from Indonesia, and will hope to see some of her fans in the stands, as there aren't many players in the draw who would have their hometown closer to the venue than the Indonesian.
The Chennai Open is held in the same week as the
Hong Kong Open and the
Jiangxi Open, and since the Top 10 players on the WTA Tour are not allowed to enter WTA 250 tournaments, none of these events will decide the WTA Finals participants.
On top of that, the 2025 Chennai Open is held from October 27th to November 2nd, and with the WTA Finals starting on November 1st, it's impossible for players participating in Chennai to make it also to the WTA Finals. That means lower-ranked player will have a shot to boost their earnings and ranking in Chennai.
All of the players competing will play for a total of $275,094 in prize money, which is a slight increase from 2022, when $251,750 was distributed at the event. Back then, Fruhvirtova received $33,200 in prize money for winning the event and 280 ranking points.
This year, the champion will receive 250 WTA points, as the points structure has changed on the WTA Tour since then. Despite earning fewer points, the champion will earn more prize money, collecting $36,300 for winning the title.
The losing finalist will have a reason to be sad, but 163 ranking points and $21,484 in prize money should be a good enough consolation prize for the runner-up in Chennai.
Players who lose in the first round of the Chennai Open also won't leave empty-handed. Those who fail to clear the first hurdle will earn 1 ranking point and $3,110. The second-round losers will get 30 points and $4,470.
Four losing quarter-finalists will feel like the final stages of the tournament were close, but 54 points and $6,820 are also nice rewards for making it to the final eight. Two defeated semi-finalists will each get 98 points and $11,970.
