The Chennai Open was held at the SDAT Tennis Stadium - also known as the Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium. The Chennai Open was one of six WTA events in the 2022 season to receive a special one-year license to hold a 250-tier competition.

This selection process followed the cancellation of professional tennis in China in 2022. Organizations withdrew from China due to issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the controversial Peng Shuai case.

Holding a WTA event in Chennai was historic for Indian tennis. It was the first time since 2008 that an elite-level women’s tournament took place in the nation. Before the Chennai Open in 2022, the previous event was held in Bengaluru, which former WTA great Serena Williams won.

As a WTA 250 competition, the Chennai Open featured a singles draw and doubles tournament. The singles event consisted of 32 players, while the doubles had 16 pairs competing for the title. In the singles, several high-quality WTA competitors entered the Chennai Open in 2022.

Some of the top seeds in the competition included former top 20 players Alison Riske-Amritraj and Magda Linette. Linette lived up to her pre-tournament favorite status and reached the Chennai Open final.

However, she was stunned by Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova in the final. Despite taking the first set, Linette lost the next two and lost to Fruhvirtova, who secured her first-ever WTA-level title.

The doubles tournament also saw lots of top-level tennis matches take place at the Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium. Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani entered the event as the top seeds and eventually won the title. The Canadian and Brazilian partners didn’t drop a set in the entire competition and beat Anna Blinkova and Natela Dzalamidze in the final.
