WTA action will return to India for the first time in three years at the 2025
Chennai Open, which is scheduled from October 27th to November 2nd.
The 2022 Chennai Open was the only previous women's edition in the city.
Linda Fruhvirtova won what remains her only WTA title, overcoming
Magda Linette 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 after a dramatic final battle.
Before the 2022 iteration in Chennai, there had not been a WTA tournament in India since the 2008 event in Bengaluru. The legendary Serena Williams, who recently
revealed her secret to weight loss, triumphed there.
Hopefully, the return of WTA action to Chennai matches local expectations. The players on the
entry list will do their best to go far at the tournament and entertain fans by producing high-quality tennis.
Donna Vekic is the most high-profile name to commit to the Chennai Open. Last year, she became an Olympic Silver Medalist and came agonizingly close to reaching the 2024 Wimbledon women's singles final.
Since losing the Wimbledon semifinal against Jasmine Paolini, Vekic has struggled for form. Some thought she would consistently challenge near the top, but that has not happened in the last 14 months.
The Croatian's match against Coco Gauff at the 2025 US Open demonstrated her decline since playing so well last year. Despite the 2023 champion at Flushing Meadows struggling severely on serve, she still defeated Vekic in straight sets.
Gauff thinks her serve has improved since the US Open, and she probably would have beaten Vekic more comfortably with her current level. Their contest in New York contrasted sharply with her win against Gauff during that run at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
However, Vekic deserves significant credit for her determination. Rather than ending 2025 early and taking time away, she is playing until the end of the season in an attempt to find form and build momentum.
Linette has an opportunity to go a step further than three years ago. A WTA 250 tournament played on a hard court probably represents the 33-year-old's best opportunity of winning another title before retirement.
Tatjana Maria is always fun to watch. The former Wimbledon semifinalist possesses the most unique playing style in tennis, but she showed its effectiveness during a stunning run to glory a few months ago at the 2025 Queen's Club Championships.
Fruhvirtova will defend her title in Chennai. Many placed high expectations on the Czech when she won the Indian title as a 17-year-old, which might have partially caused some of her struggles in the past few years.
The 20-year-old still has much time to develop and become a formidable foe on the WTA Tour. If she keeps working and believes in her undeniable natural talent, she can become a Top 20 or 10 player in the future.
Lulu Sun, Francesca Jones, Lucia Bronzetti, and Diane Parry are among the names on the Chennai Open entry list. There should be enough talent to keep fans engaged and avoid late-season fatigue, which sometimes sets in for spectators and players.
