The Italian Davis Cup team will have to fight for a third consecutive Davis Cup title without their highest-ranked player on the ATP Tour.
Italy has won the Davis Cup three times. Their first win came in 1976, but since then, the nation waited for 47 years before winning the World Cup of tennis again. That win came in 2023, with Jannik Sinner leading his country to the win.
Last year, the Italian tennis superstar played another perfect event, winning all four matches at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga to secure his second consecutive title for his country. Tennis is booming in Italy, so it was not a surprise when Bologna, Italy, was chosen as the host city for the 2025 Davis Cup Finals.
Italy will host the Davis Cup Finals for the first time since 1998, but their chances of winning a third consecutive title massively plummeted when team captain Filippo Volandri announced the line-up, which didn't include Sinner.
There were hints that Sinner might miss the Davis Cup Finals before, but it seemed unthinkable, considering his recent success at the event and the fact that it's played in Italy this year.
The 2025 Davis Cup Finals will be held between November 18th and 23rd, and with less than a month to go before the competition starts, all eight participating countries have announced their line-ups.
Carlos Alcaraz is set to lead Spain, and Alexander Zverev will represent Germany, but Jannik Sinner doesn't appear on the Italian team. Filippo Volandri nominated Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Berrettini, Flavio Cobolli, Simone Bolelli, and Andrea Vavassori to represent Italy in Bologna.
The team captain also commented on Sinner's absence, saying that he hopes to see the Italian No. 1 back in the country's colors soon.
"With our Italian players, we have built our recent successes on team spirit and mutual trust. This trust is based on hard work and the constant dedication of each member to the others. This is why we are confident that the group will meet in Bologna with even greater motivation to achieve a historic goal, a gift to the team and our fans."
"We will have to overcome tough opponents, starting with Austria, but I am fortunate to be able to count on a broad roster of players that will allow us to face this challenge with full conviction. Jannik Sinner has not confirmed his availability for 2025. The Davis Cup is, and will always be, his home, and I am certain that Jannik will soon return to the team."
"In the meantime, I can count on a group ready to fight and give everything for the Italian national team. In Bologna, it will once again be an exciting adventure. I know the value of these players, and I am confident that the future will bring us even greater satisfaction."
Angelo Binaghi, who is the President of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation, also commented on Sinner's absence, sharing his disappointment over the world No. 2's decision, even though he had understanding for it.
"We understand and respect Jannik's decision, which is deeply painful for us, and which comes at the end of a long and intense season, during which he once again demonstrated his extraordinary role model for the entire Italian tennis movement."
"For him—and for all of us—the Davis Cup represents a symbol of pride and belonging, and we are certain he will soon return to wear the blue jersey with the same passion and determination as always."
"At the same time, I want to emphasize the great confidence we place in the group led by Filippo Volandri: a solid, united team, capable of turning every difficulty into further motivation. Our players have already demonstrated their ability to achieve extraordinary goals together, and I am confident that this time too they will be able to truly honor the colors of Italy."
Italy will start its double title defense with a tie against Austria. They are the top seeds, and if they pass the opening test, the Italians will take on the winner of the tie between the third-seeded France and Belgium.
