The 2025
Hong Kong Open will be one of the last three
WTA 250 events held this year, and the
prize money details have been revealed.
This season will end with three WTA 250 tournaments. The final rounds of these events will already run during the WTA Finals, which means these tournaments won't influence anyone's chances for qualifying for the year-end event.
As is usually the case at the end of a tennis season, many players struggle with injuries, which is why it's expected that the field of players competing in Hong Kong might look completely different from the initial entry list. For example,
Emma Raducanu ended her season early and won't compete at this event.
The likes of
Naomi Osaka and
Victoria Mboko still appear on the entry list, but Osaka withdrew from her last tournament, meaning it's possible fans in Hong Kong won't have a chance to see the former world No. 1.
The Hong Kong Tennis Open was first held in 1980, and over the years, fans have had a chance to see many legends lift the trophy at this event, even though it was held only 11 times as a WTA event, as it's one of the tournaments that always appear on the calendar for a few years but are not constant. The likes of Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki lifted the trophy in Hong Kong.
This year, players will split a total of $275,094 in prize money. Last year, Diana Shnaider won the trophy in Hong Kong, and she received $35,250 for her title triumph. This year, the champion in Hong Kong will take home $36,300 and 250 WTA ranking points.
The runner-up will receive 163 points for their efforts, which can be very helpful for lower-ranked players. On top of that, $21,484 will be a financial reward for the beaten finalist. Two players who lose in the semi-finals will receive $11,970 and 98 ranking points.
No one will leave the Hong Kong Open without any points or prize money, as those who will lose in the first round of the tournament will get 1 point and $3,110. The number of points then grows 30 times for the players who make it to the second round.
The second-round losers receive 30 points and $4,470. The four quarter-finalists who end their tournament at that stage will receive 54 points and $6,820.
The Jiangxi Open and the Chennai Open will be the two tournaments running in the same week, which might be one of the most exciting weeks of tennis for lower-ranked players on the WTA Tour, as many top players end their season early to recover better for the next season. That's why the last week is often a week of great opportunities for players trying to break through.
