In 2022, the Florence Open took place at the Palazzo Wanny venue. For sponsorship reasons, the competition was also called the UniCredit Firenze Open. The Florence Open’s return in 2022 followed a 26-year break from the ATP schedule.

Originally, the event took place each year between 1973 and 1994. It was initially an ATP Grand Prix event and was played on clay courts one week before the Roland Garros. However, it became an ATP Tour-level competition in 1990, and the tournament moved in the schedule to one week after the Roland Garros.

Then, upon its return in 2022, the Florence Open was graded as an ATP 250-level tournament, held in October. The 2022 edition of the Florence Open was one of several events given a special one-year license by the ATP.

This came after professional tennis competitions were canceled in China due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the Florence Open’s history, many tennis greats have lifted the title in the singles and men’s draws.

In addition, several Italian players have achieved success in the competition. Paolo Bertolucci reached four career finals in Florence and won three titles. Former world number one and clay court specialist Thomas Muster also added three Florence Open titles to his trophy cabinet. The former Roland Garros champion won the event in three consecutive years between 1991 and 1993.

When the competition returned for its one-year special in 2022, top competitors entered. Some of the top seeds at the Palazzo Wanny included Felix Auger-Aliassime and Italian players Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Musetti.

However, Auger-Aliassime won the 2022 edition. On his way to the title, the Canadian beat Musetti and also defeated J.J. Wolf in straight sets in the final.
