Jannik Sinner is having an amazing 2023 year, and it's not done yet, as the Italian keeps adding to the long list of achievements this year.
Sinner has been touted as a big talent for a few years now but never properly broke out. This year's campaign is just that, his major breakout. Sinner started the year with some strong performances that were only a tease of what was to come.
The second part of the year was even more impressive as Sinner won a couple of big trophies by beating Daniil Medvedev in multiple finals. He then bested Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals but then lost to him in the final of that event.
He now bested the Serbian once more at the Davis Cup finals, which completed a pretty impressive milestone. With the win over Djokovic, Sinner has now ten wins against players that are ranked either first, second, third, fourth, or fifth.
He's beaten a Top-5 ranked player 10 times this year. That doesn't happen often, in fact, it rarely happens.
He's the only active player not named Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal to do it. All the other players who did it are retired by now, which tells you how rare it is. Let's take a look at the players who also did it in the past.
Most of these names should be quite familiar to you but very few of them played recently. That just shows how impossible it is to do this.
Obviously, the draw matters a lot but you generally encounter these players if you go on a deep run. Sinner had many this year in his breakout year. It's one of many great ones to come.
