After putting together an amazing run in Beijing, Jannik Sinner overcame a slow start to beat Marcos Giron at the 2023 Shanghai Masters.

Jannik Sinner was absolutely amazing last week in Beijing, besting Alcaraz and then Medvedev in consecutive matches to win the China Open. He's continued his winning streak in Shanghai though it was a bit of a slow start for the Italian.

It was not a huge surprise but he pulled himself together to ultimately take the first set in the tiebreak and cruised in the second one. Sinner should enjoy these conditions in Shanghai, though he's equally good in both slower and quicker conditions for different reasons.

Giron jumped out to an early lead 3-0, but Sinner slowly found his footing and started to take over the match. Giron stabilized well after losing the break, forcing a tiebreak, but he couldn't get over the hump as Sinner baseline player was simply overwhelming.

The Italian totalled 16 winners and only six unforced errors in the opening set, and that was more than enough. Giron doesn't have too much power in his game, but he's pretty consistent and precise with it, so he's managed to put together a really solid career.

Things opened up a bit in the second set for Sinner as his opponent expectedly dropped off a little bit. Sinner was a bit shaky as well but for the most part, too overwhelming because that's the thing. Even if he misses often, and he does, the Italian also hits more winners than his opponent, so ultimately the match will work out in his favour.

It certainly did, as he finished things in two sets 7-6(2) 6-2 to advance to the next round. He served really well and dropped only a handful of points on his serve. He had 4 aces and added 25 winners to set up a clash with Sebastian Baez in the next round.
