'Learned My Lesson': Rune On Winning Five-Set Matches After 'Heartbreaking Loss'

by Kadir Macar

Holger Rune lost in heartbreaking fashion earlier this year at the Australian Open and he wasn't going to repeat the same mistake at the 2023 Wimbledon.

Rune is Denmark's top ATP player and he's hoping to inspire many kids back home to pick a racquet in the future. So far he's been doing well in that regard as he's a Top 10 player with a promising future and likely Grand Slam trophies waiting for him as well.

He was winless on grass before this year but produced a really solid effort in Queen's to not only win but almost book his maiden final on the surface. Wimbledon has been a pretty fair experience for him as well though he needed a sensational comeback to defeat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the last match he played. He was pretty determined to win it because he didn't want to suffer another heartbreaking loss.

Yeah, I think I learned my lesson in Australia actually against Rublev. That was a very heartbreaking loss for me. It was tough, but, you know, often from these matches you learn the most. I definitely learned how to stay cooler and play better in this situation.

Although Rune did amazingly, the Spaniard helped him greatly with some questionable choices late. He's been prone to those things in the past and if Davidovich Fokina didn't play around, Rune likely wouldn't have turned it around. As for Rune, he explained how the loss to Rublev impacted him and what he changed moving forward.

You know, I did change something from that, you know, match, in that match tiebreak to the other two I played. It's going well. Like, I'm telling myself to be brave and not to put too much pressure on myself, because if you put big pressure on yourself and then you lose, it hurts so much. Just to be free. If I lose, I want to lose the right way.
