Karen Khachanov Withdraws From 2023 Los Cabos Open

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Karen Khachanov won't be playing at the 2023 Los Cabos Open after withdrawing from the event to focus on his recovery after suffering an injury before the Halle Open.

The Russian has had a really strong year so far on the courts with some impressive wins and results. He started well in Australia, making his way to the Australian Open semi-final where he was beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas in a competitive affair.

The Russian continued to play well throughout the year but missed most of the grass season due to an injury that first saw him withdraw from the Halle Open and all the events coming after. Withdrawing from Wimbledon and missing it for the second year in a row was a devastating blow for him, especially considering how well he was playing this year.

The injury is still a factor, and he won't be playing at the Los Cabos Open as intended opting to focus on recovery in hopes of making a return before the US Open. It's not that far away, and returning too soon could backfire for the Russians and it's certainly not worth it.

Spending time at home with your family isn't the worst thing to do, as he recently announced the birth of his second child. Moments with newborns are very precious, and Khachanov knows that better than most being a tennis player who is away from his home 90 % of the time. His latest social media post has him playing with his older child in the pool with the caption: "Family time during my recovery process."

It's unclear when the Russian will be fully healthy but there is hope that it will happen by the time the US Open comes around. Missing Wimbledon and the US Open back to back would be devastating, but getting healthy is the priority. Soon after the withdrawal, Khachanov posted a statement on his Instagram profile.

"I am sad to announce my withdrawal from Los Cabos. I am still not 100% ready to compete at my best level. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the tournament Abierto Los Cabos and all my incredible fans for their unwavering support! Your positive energy means the world to me! Though this setback is tough, I'm determined to come back stronger and better than ever! I hope to see you all soon on the courts."
