The 2024 US Open is the final Grand Slam of the tennis season, and the details of the prize money have been revealed.
The tournament will run from August 26th to September 8th, and the 2024 edition will mark 51 years of offering equal prize money to the men and women competing in all rounds of the US Open.
To show the remarkable improvement in prize money equity year-on-year, the purse has grown by almost a hundredfold since 1973, when it was only $100,000. Additionally, this year's total compensation is a Grand Slam record and the largest in tennis history.
In a recent announcement, the 2024 US Open tournament has allocated a total prize money of $75 million, which translates to a substantial 15% increase from last year. Therefore, all players will see a surge in their paychecks in all rounds of the competition.
The entry list for the men's tournament will include a full-strength lineup minus four-time champion Rafael Nadal. That means Novak Djokovic can pull clear of the Spaniard in the Grand Slam title count.
The Serbian star can win a record-tying fifth US Open and 25th Grand Slam overall. But he'll probably need to do that without playing a warm-up tournament following his withdrawals in Toronto and Cincinnati.
Djokovic is also expected to drop out of the top two in the ATP rankings, thereby affecting the seeding at the US Open. Former champions Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev will be on the field, having contested a final on US soil already this season in Indian Wells.
Jannik Sinner won the first hard-court major at the Australian Open and will aim to cement his spot as the World No. 1. Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Taylor Fritz, Grigor Dimitrov, Andrey Rublev and Tommy Paul will be among contenders.
The women's entry list will be spearheaded by the usual World No. 1, Iga Swiatek, who showed that she could be vulnerable even in her most comfortable setting after losing in the semifinal of the Olympics (although she won a bronze).
Swiatek has a bigger advantage over her rivals Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka as she defends the least number of points in the tournament between the three.
Elena Rybakina will hope to recover from a debitliating health problem that has seen her miss a handful of tournaments this season. Jessica Pegula has a point to prove after an injury-ravaged season.
Ons Jabeur, Maria Sakkari, and Qinwen Zheng will contend to win their first Grand Slam title. The prize money breakdown shows that players will be handsomely rewarded for their efforts with each win.
For the first time in US Open history, a first-round loss will attract a six-figure paycheck, which should massively help the lower-ranked players break even in earnings, as they will pocket $100,000. The men and women will each receive 10 points.
For players who advance to the second round, men will receive 50 points, while women will receive 70 points, with both earning $140,000. Reaching the third-round stage guarantees 100 ATP points and 130 WTA points, with an added compensation of $215,000 in prize money.
The return is even greater for those who make it to the second week. Fourth-rounders will make $325,000 each, along with 200 ATP points and 240 WTA points.
This being a record prize money total, quarterfinalists stand to make half a million dollars. They will earn $530,000. The men will be awarded 400 points and the women 430 points.
The 2024 US Open semifinalists will receive 800 ATP points or 780 WTA points and a hefty $1,000,000. The first-round stage and the final stage are the only times when the ATP and WTA will have parity in prize money and points.
In the championship match, the 2024 US Open winners on either Tour will receive a colossal $3,600,000 and 2000 points. The runners-up will bank $1,800,000 and will receive 1300 points. The complete breakdown can be seen below.
