The Australian Open tournament director, Craig Tiley, believes Coco Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz lead the new generation.
The new generations of tennis are slowly taking over, and while Novak Djokovic is still kicking around, it won't last forever. The next-gen 2.0 is waiting to take over from the Serbian, and Carlos Alcaraz is the leading player among them.
On the women's side of the sport, we have a couple of players who are competing for the top spot, but somehow, it seems like Coco Gauff is destined to be the one in the next 10 years. Australian Open director Tiley agrees with that, seeing those two most likely to dominate in the coming years.
On the men's side and the women's side, there's quite a lot. There are some that are starting to stake their claim as being the heir apparent to that. I think Coco and Carlos are the two that are probably ahead of the pack in that. But the pack is broad, which is great.
Predicting the future is never easy, especially with some things that are out of anybody's control. There are so many things that could impact the careers of either, but generally, if everything goes fine, it's not hard to imagine both dominating the sport.
In some ways, they already are. Alcaraz seems to be further along that path, but Gauff has plenty of time left. She was basically unbeatable at the US Open, and she can play far better than that. The upcoming Australian Open is a good chance for both to assess where they are in the pecking order.
Alcaraz missed the event last year but played great the previous year. Gauff had some solid success down under as well, so it should be interesting. First, they'll play at the ATP and WTA Finals soon.
