Xiyu Wang is a Chinese professional tennis player who was born on March 28, 2001, in Taixing, China. She showed her talent for tennis early on, and soon after that, she turned it into a flourishing junior career.
Highlights of her career among juniors include the US Open girls' singles title in 2018 as well as the Wimbledon girls' doubles title that same season, catapulting her to the number-one spot in the world.
Despite still being an active member on the junior tour, her WTA main draw debut, in fact, came before both these victories at the 2017 Tianjin Open. Back in 2018, she was ready to kick on and upwards, reaching the latter stages of some ITF tournaments which helped her push on to the main tour.
Full of confidence, Wang recorded her first appearance and win at the WTA 1000 level at the Miami Open against Monica Puig. Some positive results later, and before she knew it, she had qualified for her first Grand Slam, coming up against Kirsten Flipkens in the first round of the US Open.
She carried this momentum into 2020, when she reached her first WTA-level semifinal, losing to Heather Watson in Acapulco. Further progress saw her becoming more of a regular at WTA tournaments year-round, propelling her up the rankings.
Qualifying automatically for the 2022 Australian Open, it was Wang’s first opportunity to get her first win at Grand Slam level, against Viktoria Hruncakova. Still irregularly using the ITF tournaments to work her way up, she had her first taste of a WTA final at the WTA 125 event in Valencia that same season, ultimately losing to third seed Qinwen Zheng.
2023 got off to a great start for her, with her recording her breaking into the world's Top 50. This came before she carried on this stellar form, with Wang reaching her first fourth round at a WTA 1000 event in Rome before she went on to claim her maiden WTA title at the Guangzhou Open, where she defeated Magda Linette in the final.
