Tennis never stops and the 2025
Singapore Open is a great proof of that, as the
draw for the new
WTA 250 event has been released.
On Saturday,
Madison Keys lifted her maiden Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open, and already on Monday, January 27th, players will compete at the Singapore Open, more than an eight-hour flight far from Melbourne.
The 2025 Singapore Tennis Open is a WTA 250 event, which will run from January 27th until February 2nd, and it will be the first edition of this tournament in over three decades. It was first held in 1986 but ended already in 1994 before returning to the calendar in 2025, replacing the Thailand Open in Hua Hin.
Plenty of exciting players signed up for the first edition of this renewed tournament. The top seed in Singapore will be
Anna Kalinskaya, who didn't play at the Australian Open after she was forced to retire from her first-round match in Adelaide.
The Russian player hopefully had enough time to recover, as she will await a proper challenge in the first round in Singapore. Her first opponent will be Caroline Dolehide. Should she win, Kalinskaya would play against either
Ajla Tomljanovic or Simona Waltert.
The top part of the draw is really star-studded. The seventh-seeded
Emma Raducanu is also part of it. The British player will want to forget
her thrashing loss to Iga Swiatek, and she will have a chance to do that in the first round against
Cristina Bucsa.
If the British player succeeds in the first round, her second-round match might be a bit easier. The 2021 US Open champion would play against the winner of the match between two qualifiers, Sijia Wei and Mananchaya Sawangkaew.
Amanda Anisimova, who Raducanu beat in Melbourne, will be the third seed in Singapore after accepting a wild card. In the first round, the American player will play against
Xiyu Wang. In the second round, her opponent could be
Daria Saville or Ann Li.
The second seed in Singapore is
Elise Mertens. She was one of the players announced when the tournament's addition to the calendar was made public. Back then, the Belgian player said that participating in an inaugural edition of an event is always exciting.
But it won't be so exciting for her on the court. In the first round, she will have to play against
Taylor Townsend unless the American player withdraws from the tournament. Townsend won the Australian Open doubles title on Sunday, and getting to Singapore so quickly might be challenging for her.
One of the dark horses of this tournament will be
Alycia Parks. The American player will start against qualifier Maya Joint. In the second round, she could meet Rebecca Marino or
Xinyu Wang.
