The Singapore Open, also called the Singapore Tennis Open, is a WTA 250 tournament held at the Kallang Tennis Centre in Singapore. The event was first held back in the 1980s before disappearing from the calendar for over three decades.
A WTA event was first held in Singapore in 1986. In its first three years, it was called the Singapore Open, and in the last two editions (1989 and 1990), the tournament was called the DHL Open for sponsorship reasons. It briefly returned for one year in 1994. Then, it was called the Singapore Classic.
After more than three decades away from the calendar, the Singapore Open returned in 2025. It replaced the Thailand Open in Hua Hin, taking the spot in the calendar right after the conclusion of the Australian Open.
Tennis might not have a rich history in Singapore, but the WTA Finals were held in the country from 2014 until 2018, even though that was at a different venue, the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
In the past, an ATP tournament was held in Singapore as well. Similarly to the women's event, it was first held in the 1980s, and the men's tournament also made a return after a couple of decades away from the calendar.
After not being held since its last edition in 1999, the ATP Singapore Open returned to the calendar in 2021. Unfortunately for the tennis fans in Singapore, it was only for one year, as the tournament is now not part of the calendar.
The WTA event will mark its seventh edition in 2025, and the tournament will hope to solidify its spot in the calendar, even though it won't be easy with many great events held in the weeks around.
