The 2025 Singapore Open draw at the start of the tournament on Monday was very strong, and the players who signed up know what prize money and ranking points are on offer.
Emma Raducanu was among those who participated in the ongoing Singapore Open. However, the 2021 US Open champion lost a grueling three-hour battle on Monday against Cristina Bucsa in her first match since splitting with coach Nick Cavaday.
Despite that setback, Raducanu found positives in her performance, claiming it was better than in any of her matches at the Australian Open. But the 22-year-old was probably less pleased about the prize money she received for losing in the opening round.
$2,975 is the reward for players who fail to win a main draw contest at the Singapore Open. Those who fall at the first hurdle are also given a miserly one ranking point, which will probably feel like getting nothing.
Players left in the draw hope to make a deep run. While the WTA 500 tournament at the Austria Linz Open, also occurring this week, offers more prize money and ranking points, the winner of the WTA 250 tournament in Singapore will be well compensated, taking a significant part of the $275,094 distributed at the event.
The 2025 Singapore Open champion will get $36,300 and 250 ranking points. No WTA tournaments have been held in the country since 1994, giving someone a unique chance to be the first winner in 31 years.
The runner-up at the Singapore Open will be awarded $21,484 and 163 points. Anna Kalinskaya, the No. 1 seed at the event, undoubtedly views the WTA 250 tournament as an excellent opportunity to win or at least reach a final.
Rewards for the losing semifinalists are less significant but still worth the trip. $11,970 and 98 ranking points are set to be given to whichever players fall at that stage. Those points could be crucial for climbing the rankings.
Many of the players in the draw might only feel the trip was worthwhile if they get to at least the quarterfinals. The four women who lose in the quarterfinals will increase their bank balance by $6,815 and receive 54 ranking points.
Bucsa and the other players who reached the Singapore Open's round of 16 are guaranteed at least $4,160 and 30 ranking points. They can earn more by winning another match and reaching the quarterfinals.
As mentioned previously, the draw at the Singapore Open is strong for a WTA 250 event. However, it would have been even stronger had it not for some unfortunate withdrawals before and after the tournament started.
Amanda Anisimova, who lost to Raducanu at the Australian Open, withdrew on Monday because of a minor injury. The American did not go into detail about the issue, but her being careful for the rest of the season is understandable.
2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin pulled out of the Singapore Open before the tournament began. She has struggled for consistency during the last few years but remains a significant name on the WTA Tour.
