Cristina Bucsa is a Moldovan-born Spanish professional tennis player who was born on January 1, 1998, in Chisinau, Moldova. Born to sporting father Ion, a former biathlete for Moldova, the family moved to Spain with Cristina aged 3, where she was then encouraged to pick up sports, tennis being the chosen one.
After establishing herself on the ITF Tour throughout her formative years, it was not until the 2021 Bogota Open that she made her debut appearance at the main draw of a WTA event. Losing in the first round did not put her off, and she went on to get more experience at that level before eventually qualifying for what was her Grand Slam debut at that season’s US Open.
Breaking into the Top 100 in early 2023, Bucsa went on to have a great year. It kicked off in the best way possible, with her reaching a career-best third round at the Australian Open. Not long after, she claimed her first WTA title in the doubles event at the Lyon Open. This was not her only silverware for 2023, with her claiming the WTA 125 title in Limoges.
The progress did not stop there, with the Spaniard reaching a career-best Australian Open quarterfinal in doubles before going to Bogota with Kamila Rakhimova for her second career doubles title. More stand-out results were to come, with her and compatriot Sara Sorribes Tormo winning the WTA 1000 doubles event in Madrid, with this becoming Bucsa’s highest-ranking tournament win to date.
The accolades did not stop there, with her claiming her first WTA 500 doubles tournament win at the Strasbourg Open with partner Monica Niculsecu. This outrageous run of form meant that she had broken into the Top 20 in doubles, and also Top 60 in singles in 2024.
