The 2025 Austria Open Linz is the highest-level tournament on the WTA calendar this week. That means the prize money and ranking point prizes are also more significant.
A feature of the WTA calendar since 1987, the Austria Open Linz is a great way to follow the Australian Open. Several iconic players in the women's game have won the title since it was first played 38 years ago.
Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo, and Coco Gauff, who lost in the Australian Open quarterfinal to Paula Badosa, are among many massive names from the WTA Tour to win the tournament.
Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, won last year's Austria Open Linz. However, the Mercurial Latvian has understandably decided not to compete at the tournament this year after reaching the Australian Open women's doubles final.
This year's Austria Open Linz champion will earn a substantial €142,610, from the overall prize pool of €925,661, for being the best player of the week in Austria. The tournament's WTA 500 status also means the winner will receive 500 ranking points.
While losing a final is always disappointing, as Ekaterina Alexandrova discovered in last year's Austria Open Linz final, the runner-up rewards of 325 ranking points and €87,825 is a more than decent consolation prize for that player.
One of the most epic semifinals of 2024 took place in the 2024 edition of the event. Olympic gold medalist Donna Vekic and Alexandrova battled for hours in front of the fans before Alexandrova eventually prevailed 5-7, 7-6, 7-6.
Former French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was the other losing semifinalist last year. The two women who fall at that stage in 2025 will have €51,305 added to their bank accounts and get 195 ranking points.
The rewards for the four players defeated in the quarterfinal are also pretty good. They will collect 108 ranking points and €24,950 in prize money, which is solid for winning two main draw matches.
€13,651 and 60 points will be given to the players who win in the opening round. Most of those matches have already been completed, with the remaining first-round contests scheduled for Wednesday.
Only one ranking point is awarded to players who lose in the opening round of the WTA 500 main draws. However, those already defeated and who fall on Wednesday in the round of 32 will still receive €9,829.
Muchova and Elina Svitolina are the Top 2 seeds at the Austria Open Linz. Svitolina resisted the temptation to rest after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, losing in three sets to the eventual champion Madison Keys.
The top four seeds, Muchova, Svitolina, Maria Sakkari, and Alexandrova, were given byes into the round of 16. Sakkari is trying to rebuild after missing the closing stages of 2024 with an injury, so any wins are especially important for her.
There have already been some fascinating clashes at the Austria Open Linz, and there promises to be many more throughout the tournament. Predicting who will win the title is challenging, and there might be many twists and turns over the course of the week.
