Amanda Anisimova, one of the biggest draws at this week's Singapore Open, has had to withdraw because of an injury she sustained while preparing for the tournament.

Anisimova's last match was a defeat in the Australian Open second round against Emma Raducanu. Despite some trademark powerful hitting from the American, Raducanu produced superb defense to win 6-3, 7-5.

The 23-year-old's performance at the Australian Open was decent, considering her preparation was disrupted when she pulled out of the Hobart International quarterfinal a few days before the event began due to an injury concern.

Anisimova undoubtedly hoped to build on playing pretty well at the season's opening Grand Slam in Singapore. The Southeast Asian event being WTA-250 level meant it seemed like a good opportunity for the young star to challenge for the title.

She was set to face Xiyu Wang in the opening round. Unfortunately, Anisimova announced in an Instagram story that she had pulled out of the tournament because of a small injury, something she is gutted about.

"Hi guys, I have picked up a small injury, and I am gutted that I won't be able to play in Singapore this week. I've enjoyed my time here, and I hope I can come back to this event soon."

Anisimova has sustained many injuries during her young career. Therefore, it is sensible to be cautious when a minor problem appears, especially when bigger tournaments are upcoming on the WTA calendar.

Last season, Anisimova returned to professional tennis after being on hiatus for most of 2023. That decision was taken to protect her mental health, and she has spoken openly and courageously about that move.

The former French Open semifinalist struggled for consistency throughout most of 2024. There were flashes of her blistering best in the opening seven months of the season, but she did not produce it for several matches in a row.

However, that all changed during a stunning run to the final of the Canadian Open in August. Anisimova reached the quarterfinal with victories against Caroline Dolehide, Daria Kasatkina, and Anna Kalinskaya.

The current world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was left stunned when Anisimova overpowered her to progress to the semifinals. She then booked a place in the semifinal against Jessica Pegula by winning a three-set battle against Emma Navarro.

Anisimova was one set away from securing a maiden WTA 1000 title before Pegula played a superb final set to triumph. Despite that heartbreaking ending, the former world No. 21's run in Toronto was among the best seen in 2024.

It can be easy to forget how young the two-time WTA title winner is. More than five years have passed since her breakthrough, when Anisimova stormed to the semifinal of the French Open at the age of 17.

The Canadian Open runner-up can reach that level and get even better if she stays fit and healthy. Ansimova is among the most dangerous players on the WTA Tour when she is confident in her ability.

Hopefully, the 23-year-old will avoid injuries, and fans will enjoy watching her progress throughout the 2025 season.
