The entry list for the first edition of the renewed Singapore Open, which is a new WTA 250 event, has been released.
There will be a new tournament on the WTA Tour in 2025. The Thailand Open in Hua Hin, which was previously part of the calendar, is no longer among the tournaments, and the Singapore Tennis Open replaced it.
This tournament will be held again after more than two decades. A WTA tournament was first held in Singapore in 1986 when Gigi Fernandez beat Mercedes Paz in the final of the tournament.
Since then, it was held five more times. Anne Minter was the champion in 1987, Monique Javer won in 1988, Belinda Cordwell triumphed in 1989, and the last two editions, in 1990 and 1994, were won by Naoko Sawamatsu.
Obviously, none of these players competes anymore, which means there will be another champion crowned when the Singapore Open returns to the calendar, and many players will be trying to put their names into the history books.
Between 2014 and 2018, the WTA Finals were held in Singapore, and now, the country will have its own tournament again. The 2025 Singapore Open will be held from January 27th until February 2nd, which means it starts after the conclusion of the Australian Open.
The event will be held at the Kallang Tennis Centre, and to build excitement for the event, a few players were announced already before the entry list was made public.
Now, the full entry list for the first edition of this renewed tournament has been released, and the highest-ranked player who chose to enter the tournament is Anna Kalinskaya.
Although Kalinskaya is the highest-ranked player on the entry list, there are also two Grand Slam champions who will compete at the WTA 250 tournament in Singapore.
Emma Raducanu is one of them. The British player held a training camp in Singapore in 2022, so she's familiar with the facilities in the country, and that's also likely one of the reasons why she chose to return.
Another Grand Slam winner in the players' field is Sofia Kenin. The American player is still looking to find that tennis that led her to the Australian Open win, and she hopes to find some inspired level in Singapore.
The likes of Elise Mertens, Xinyu Wang, Maria Camila Osorio, and Yafan Wang will want to make use of the fact that since the Singapore Open is not an established event among the players, the field won't be that strong.
Still, the two major winners should make the tournament exciting for all the fans attending. It remains to be seen for how long the Singapore Open stays in the calendar.
