Iga Swiatek will begin her 74th week at the top of the women's rankings, maintaining her 1,209-point gap over second-placed Aryna Sabalenka ahead of the 2023 US Open.
With both players taking a week off before the year's final major, there was no movement in the WTA rankings between the world's top two. Swiatek on 9,955 points therefore maintains the same lead from the previous week over Sabalenka who is second on 8,746 points.
Swiatek will have fate in her own hands at the US Open she only needs a better result than Sabalenka to stay the No. 1 player at the end of the tournament. Swiatek will drop 2,000 ranking points in the live rankings at the start of the US Open, while Sabalenka will drop 780 points.
That means Sabalenka holds an 11-point advantage in the live rankings and if both of them lose in the same round, it will be Sabalenka who will become No. 1 at the end of the fortnight. If both players made the final, then it will be a straight shootout for the No. 1 ranking.
There was limited movement in the world's Top 20. Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova rejoins that club after her runner-up finish in Cleveland. The surprise champion at the event, Sara Sorribes Tormo, jumps 40 spots to 55th in the latest rankings - representing the biggest mover of the week.
Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova rejoins the world's Top 100 at No. 82 after winning the Chicago 125K title at the weekend. While beaten finalist at that tournament, Claire Liu rises 12 spots into the world's Top 70.
Resurgent Sofia Kenin drops out of the world's Top 100 after missing the entire US Open summer series due to a thigh injury. Kenin, who is a wild card entrant at this year's US Open will therefore play her first hard-court match since March when she takes on Ana Bogdan on Tuesday.
Romania's Simona Halep whose verdict of her doping case is still pending, is currently outside the Top 1000 with 10 points. Halep will be unranked at the end of the tournament.
