Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the 2022 Madrid Open, where the Polish player was set to enter the tournament as the top seed, following a shoulder injury.
WTA world number one Swiatek won four titles in a row so far in the 2022 season, and she is currently on a 23-match winning streak. The Polish player could have extended her sequence of victories at the 2022 Madrid Open, but she will have to wait for a return at the Italian Open after sustaining a shoulder injury.
Swiatek was going to be seeded first in the 2022 Madrid Open, and she was aiming to seal her fifth championship in a row after winning the Qatar Open, Indian Wells, Miami Open, and Porsche Tennis Grand Prix already this season.
However, the 20-year-old stated that a recent injury would leave her sidelined for the foreseeable future following an intense run of competitions.
"After intense last weeks and winning 4 titles in a row it's time to take care of my arm that has been fatigued since the Miami Open and I haven't had a chance to handle it properly. I need a break from playing so intensively in order to treat my arm well and that's why, unfortunately, I have to withdraw from Madrid Open."
"My body needs rest. I'm going to take some time to prepare for Rome and Paris. See you soon there. Hopefully, I will play in Madrid many times in the future, looking forward to it."
Swiatek will now likely focus on building fitness for a return at the Italian Open, which takes place between May 7 and 15, 2022. The current world number one lifted the title in Rome last season when she beat Karolina Pliskova in the final without dropping a game.
Moreover, the 20-year-old will look to resume her top-level form in the first part of 2022. So far in this campaign, Swiatek has won 32 of the 35 matches she has played.
