2023 Hong Kong Open WTA Draw With Andreeva, Azarenka, Haddad Maia & more

The 2023 Hong Kong Open will run from October 9th to 15th, offering an opportunity for the WTA's unheralded players to win a title as the season draws to a close.

The draw for this year's tournament has been released, which features a plethora of intriguing matches right from the get-go, and perhaps none bigger than a meeting between a former Grand Slam champion and a Grand Slam finalist. On that note, let us take an in-depth look at this year's draw.

In the top half of the draw, top seed Victoria Azarenka will start her campaign against Leylah Fernandez - the marquee match of the first round in Hong Kong. The Canadian lefty has shown signs of life in recent weeks after a tough season, while the Belarusian struggled with her fitness in a first-round defeat to Magda Linette in Beijing.

Another first-round match that is a must-see pits Dayana Yastremska against 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva. The bad blood between these two players is well documented given the current tension between their respective countries. The winner of that clash will face one of Azarenka or Fernandez in round two.

Azarenka's path to the title is complicated. If she scales her first two hurdles, a potential quarterfinal against fast-rising American Peyton Stearns is lurking. Stearns has a winnable opener against Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova who is not having a great year.

The 22-year-old Ohio native is guaranteed to face a player ranked outside the Top 100 in the second round should she get there. Russia's Anna Blinkova will face Yulia Putintseva in what should be a fiercely competitive opening match in the top half.

Second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia is the second-biggest favorite to win the tournament in Hong Kong. The Brazilian lefty starts her campaign against experienced Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The winner of that match will likely take on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who is the overwhelming favorite to beat Croatia's Jana Fett.

China's Xiyu Wang is also in the bottom half of the draw and has a difficult test against doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova. If the Chinese lefty is successful she will face one of Varvara Gracheva or Kamilla Rakhimova in the subsequent round.

Third seed Elise Mertens appears to have the most favorable draw among the big names. The Belgian will begin her Hong Kong adventure against a qualifier, and might actually play another qualifier in the second round if home wild card Hong Yi Cody Wong is unable to get a maiden WTA win.

Mertens' first real test will come in the quarterfinal against Martina Trevisan. But the sixth-seeded Italian will need to tame Cristina Bucsa in her opener and one of Magdalena Frech or a qualifier in her second match.
