The 2023 Charleston Open will kick off the clay-court part of the season. The prize money and points details for the event in Charleston have been made public.
Clay is often nicknamed the "red dirt," but the surface on which the WTA players will start the clay-court part of the season in Charleston won't be red. The clay in Charleston is famously green, which makes this tournament very special.
It's a WTA 500 event, and in 2022, Belinda Bencic won the trophy in Charleston. In 2023, the Swiss player will defend her title but also a big part of the points and prize money that she earned.
This year, a total of $780,637 will be distributed to the players competing at this WTA 500 event, which starts on April 3rd. It's the first tournament held after the Miami Open, and it will be held alongside the Bogota Open.
The 2023 Charleston Open champion will go home with the winner's trophy, a lot of pride and confidence, nice pictures, and some $120,150 and 470 WTA ranking points.
The runner-up will receive 305 ranking points and $74,161, while the two losing semi-finalists will each get 185 points and $43,322 for their efforts.
Aryna Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur, and Jessica Pegula will be among the favorites to win the Charleston Open this year. For them, not reaching at least the quarter-finals would be a huge disappointment. If they make it to the quarter-final stage, though, they will receive 100 points and $21,075 in prize money.
No one will go home empty-handed. Players will receive 1 WTA ranking point for a first-round loss and $8,310. However, making the second round offers much better rewards. Those that win at least one match will receive 55 points and $11,500.
