Tennis fans worldwide were left stunned when Carlos Alcaraz and longtime coach and mentor Juan Carlos Ferrero parted ways, and the latter has revealed whether they have communicated since.
Despite Alcaraz still being just 22, his spell with Ferrero is among the most successful in tennis history. The 2003 French Open champion began coaching his then-teenage compatriot in 2019, when the latter was a promising young star.
Under Ferrero's guidance, Alcaraz has become a superstar and one of the most watchable players in tennis history. He is a six-time Grand Slam champion and finished 2025 as the ATP world No. 1 ahead of Jannik Sinner.
The only Major title Alcaraz and Ferrero did not win together was the Australian Open. Although it is still a few weeks away, the fan favorite's outfit for the 2026 edition in Melbourne was recently revealed. It is bright and colorful.
Alcaraz, having a career-best 2025 that included securing two more Grand Slams, made the split from Ferrero even more surprising. Disagreements between the coach and others close to Alcaraz reportedly caused it to happen.
In an interview with Radio Nacional de España, Ferrero answered a question many fans have been curious about since the shock news was announced: Have he and Alcaraz been in contact despite no longer having a player/coach relationship?
"We haven't spoken yet because he needs to be calm now so he can train. And when things settles down, we'll talk and everything will be fine."
Ferrero's kind words about Alcaraz in the same interview support the possibility that the two will speak again eventually. He thinks the pair can be friends after achieving so much together.
"I've learned so much from Carlos. He's a kid who exudes incredible charisma. He is always very loyal, very honest, he always tells the truth, he is very hardworking. And I'm leaving happy because when all this settles down, I'm sure we'll keep talking, reminiscing about many of the things we experienced together, and we'll remain friends."
No longer coaching Alcaraz after putting in so much work to make him among the best must be one of the toughest moments of Ferrero's life. Taking some time before contacting the 22-year-old might also be good for him.

Juan Carlos Ferrero was asked about coaching Jannik Sinner after splitting from Carlos Alcaraz

One of Juan Carlos Ferrero's principal jobs as Carlos Alcaraz's coach since the start of 2024 has been helping him devise ways to beat Jannik Sinner. The pair have won every men's singles Grand Slam contested in the past two seasons.
With Ferrero no longer Alcaraz's coach after their surprising split, the coach was asked about the possibility of a stunning move to Sinner's team, which would be among the most notable off-court switches in tennis history.
Ferrero did not rule it out when asked, instead saying he wanted time to come to terms with no longer being Alcaraz's coach. Sinner is still coached by Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill after the latter reversed his decision to retire at the end of 2025.
