Nick Kyrgios won't compete at the upcoming Cincinnati Open after withdrawing from yet another event.
Kyrgios has been away from the tennis courts for quite some time. After having the best season of his career in 2022, the Australian briefly returned in 2023, but after playing one match, he missed the rest of that season and the entire 2024 season as well.
This year, the 30-year-old returned to the courts in Brisbane, winning a doubles match with Novak Djokovic, but losing his singles match to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
His comeback didn't stop there. Kyrgios played at the Australian Open, but struggled with an injury against Jacob Fearnley. He then also played the Sunshine Double, but that started with a retirement against Botic van de Zandschulp in Indian Wells.
In Miami, the Australian player won his first match since 2022, beating Mackenzie McDonald. After that, he lost to Karen Khachanov, and since then, Kyrgios has been away from the tennis courts.
There were several events that he signed up for, but withdrew every time. Now, he also withdrew from the 2025 Cincinnati Open, which is the last ATP Masters 1000 event before the US Open.
Kyrgios used his protected ranking to join the entry list, but he probably feels he isn't ready to compete yet, withdrawing from the tournament, which runs from August 7th until August 18th.

2025 Cincinnati Open drowning in withdrawals

Kyrgios isn't the only one who withdrew from the event. On Monday, Novak Djokovic removed his name from the list of participants, and so did many others.
Jack Draper, Grigor Dimitrov, Alexander Bublik, Sebastian Korda, Hubert Hurkacz, Matteo Berrettini, Quentin Halys, Laslo Djere, and Jenson Brooksby will all miss the tournament.

What's next for Nick Kyrgios after Cincinnati Open withdrawal

Kyrgios finds himself in a challenging spot in his tennis career. In the past three years, he has played a total of six matches, and it seems that he might be unable to return to his peak tennis again.
The Australian has previously stated that for him, it's a miracle that he was even able to return to the court, as his prognosis wasn't ideal. His repeated withdrawals only prove that it's challenging for him to get to peak condition.
For now, Kyrgios appears on the entry list for the 2025 US Open, but the question is whether he will truly compete at the New York Slam. The tournament at Flushing Meadows starts on August 24th, which leaves the Australian with a race against time.

Retirement becoming a real option for Kyrgios

With his limited playing time in recent years, it's a real possibility that fans might see the end of Kyrgios' career at next year's Australian Open. He has stated many times that he loves playing in front of his home fans, and there wouldn't be a better place for him to end his career, especially since he managed to win his only Grand Slam title (in doubles) at the event.
At the same time, Kyrgios is still only 30, and if he wants to follow the likes of Stan Wawrinka, he could still compete for another 10 years. However, that's something he always insisted he doesn't plan on doing.
