The 2025 Japan Championships in Osaka will be held from October 13th to 19th, and the prize money and ranking points have been unveiled.
Naomi Osaka will lead the action in her home country. The four-time Grand Slam champion could not play last year because of an injury she sustained at the 2024 China Open against Coco Gauff.
Due to strict WTA rules, WTA 250 tournaments often lack highly ranked stars. Players are allowed a few exemptions each year for home events, allowing Osaka to participate at the Japan Championships.
Although the 2018 and 2020 US Open champion is the top attraction, many other great players are on the entry list, including Leylah Fernandez, Maria Sakkari, and Linda Noskova, meaning it should be an exciting tournament.
There is a $275,094 prize money pot for the Japan Championships. Predicting who will secure the highest percentage of that is not easy, since there are players on the entry list capable of causing Osaka problems.
The 2025 Japan Championships champion will receive $36,300 and 250 ranking points. Suzan Lamens won last year's title after winning a surprising final matchup against fellow qualifier, Kimberly Birrell.
Amanda Anisimova and Eugenie Bouchard are among the other former runner-ups since the tournament was first played in 2009. This year's losing finalist will collect $21,484 and 163 points for that achievement.
Diane Parry was the only seeded player to reach the 2024 Japan Championships semifinals but fell to Lamens, the eventual champion. The 2025 semifinalists will leave Osaka with $11,970 and 98 points.
Eva Lys, who had an excellent run to the 2025 China Open quarterfinal that French Open champion Gauff ultimately ended, was among the 2024 quarterfinalists in Osaka. She would have received $6,820 and 54 points for that effort this year.
Naomi Osaka will have to fight for her place in the round of 16 since no byes are awarded at WTA 250 tournaments. The former WTA world No. 1 will be guaranteed at least $4,470 and 30 ranking points if she manages that.
One ranking point and $3,110 will be handed to the 16 women who fall in the opening round. Hopefully, many memorable matches are played, and most of those on the entry list produce great tennis.
The Japan Championships is not the only WTA tournament in the country. The 2025 Japan Open in Tokyo is scheduled from October 20th to 26th. It is a 500-level event, meaning its entry list is even more impressive, especially with the race for the WTA Finals still ongoing.
Osaka has also committed to playing at the Japan Open, but she will be joined by others like Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, Qinwen Zheng, Jasmine Paolini, and Karolina Muchova for what could be a late-season treat for the fans.
Coco Gauff qualified for the 2025 WTA Finals a few days ago. Some of the Japan Open's players will try to join the two-time Grand Slam champion by getting as many points as possible in Tokyo.
