The draw for the 2025 Indian Wells Open didn't disappoint. The first ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season features multiple blockbusters.
The 2025 Indian Wells Open, also called the BNP Paribas Open for sponsorship reasons, will run from March 5th until 16th. It's the first ATP Masters 1000 event on the calendar, and it's often called "the fifth Slam."
This year, it will be held without the World No. 1 player in the draw. Jannik Sinner can't compete because of his three-month suspension, which means Alexander Zverev inherited the top-seeded spot.
The German player experienced first-hand that there are no easy draws at the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. He will play against either Miomir Kecmanovic or Tallon Griekspoor in the second round, and both are very solid opponents.
Although Zverev's draw is challenging, there is one man who could complain even more. The sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic could start against Nick Kyrgios, who will start against a qualifier, in the second round of the tournament. The Australian player beat Djokovic in two of their three meetings.
On top of that, the 24-time Grand Slam champion landed in the bottom quarter of the draw. That means he might meet no other than the second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz. The 37-year-old Serbian could be happy about the surface change in Indian Wells, as that could decrease the Spaniard's chances.
Still, as a two-time defending champion, Alcaraz will be one of the top favorites to succeed in Indian Wells. But his draw won't be easy either.
He will start against the winner of the match between Quentin Halys and a qualifier, but he can play against the 27th-seeded Denis Shapovalov already in the third round. The Canadian player found some serious form recently, and he could be a big obstacle to overcome.
As is usually the case, the 2025 Indian Wells Open draw is full of exciting first-round matches or possible second-round meetings. For example, teenage prodigy Joao Fonseca, who received a wild card, will start against Jacob Fearnley in the first round of the tournament.
That's a match of two talented young players, and the winner will move to the second round to face the 13th-seeded Jack Draper.
The fourth-seeded Casper Ruud could start against home player Marcos Giron in the second round, while recent Dubai Championships winner Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on the winner of the match between Alexandre Muller and Thiago Seyboth Wild.
