Three ATP tournaments will be played from October 13th to 19th. One of these is the 2025 Almaty Open, and its prize money and ranking points have been released.
The Almaty Open occurs in the first week of indoor hard-court tournaments. It is also the last ATP event in Asia until 2026, with the European Open in Brussels and the Stockholm Open running simultaneously.
Last year's edition was the first iteration held in Almaty after four years in Astana. Karen Khachanov secured the title by overcoming the talented Gabriel Diallo in a deciding set after much excellent tennis.
Novak Djokovic played in Astana in 2022, which was its only year as a 500-level tournament. Chinese tournaments were held again in 2023 after the COVID-19 pandemic led to their reverting to a 250-level.
The hectic schedule and fatigue among players after a lengthy season have not stopped several great players from signing up for the tournament. Khachanov will defend his title as the No. 1 seed in Almaty.
Daniil Medvedev will try to keep his slim hopes of qualifying for the 2025 ATP Finals alive by going far at the tournament. The 2021 US Open champion last won a title in May 2023 at the Italian Open, which was also his first clay-court success.
Although Medvedev is probably more interested in the ranking points than the prize money, a $1,055,255 prize money pot has been committed, and the players will fight for the highest share of it.
The 2025 Almaty Open champion will earn 250 points and $160,500. That financial reward is significantly more than what is offered in Brussels or Stockholm, which might have convinced some players to compete in Kazakhstan.
This year's runner-up will collect $93,635 and 165 points. Despite his challenging season, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who replaced Jack Draper at the 2025 Six Kings Slam, was the runner-up to Djokovic in 2022.
Khachanov's semifinal against Aleksandar Vukic at the 2024 edition was epic. The Australian had the eventual champion on the ropes after taking the opening set on a tiebreak, but Khachanov responded superbly to triumph 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 after a battle filled with superb shotmaking.
Francisco Cerndolo was the other defeated semifinalist. Whoever replicates their achievement will leave the 2025 Almaty Open with 100 points and $55,045, not a bad reward for getting that far.
This year's losing quarterfinalists will receive $31,895 and 50 points. Although the sums for the winner, runner-up, and semifinalists are not as impressive, the 50 points could still improve the ranking of some players.
Khachanov, Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli, and Luciano Darderi are the seeded players in Almaty. Those that reach the round of 16 are guaranteed $18,520 and 25 points regardless of how much further they go in the tournament.
No ranking points will be given to players who fall in the opening round, but they will still leave the tournament with $11,315 added to their bank accounts. Hopefully, the Almaty Open is a fitting conclusion to a memorable Asian swing after Valentin Vacherot's triumph in Shanghai.
