The
European Open relocated for the 2025 edition of the tournament, and the first
draw for the event in Brussels has been unveiled.
The European Open was first held in 2016 in Antwerp. Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won the first two editions, with both beating Diego Schwartzman in the final. Over the years, the likes of Andy Murray and Jannik Sinner have won the event.
There were a total of nine editions held in Antwerp's Lotto Arena, but the 10th edition will be held at a different venue and in a different city. The European Open moved to Brussels, and the event will be held at the Brussels Expo.
The organizers managed to secure a strong field for the first edition of the tournament, headlined by a Top 10 player.
Lorenzo Musetti will be the top seed in Brussels, and like all top four seeds, he has a first-round bye. In his first match in Brussels, he can meet compatriot Matteo Arnaldi in an all-Italian second-round match. For that to happen, Arnaldi will need to beat one of the qualifiers.
Felix Auger-Aliassime is the second seed. He loves the last weeks of each season, as he's one of the best players on indoor hard courts. He will want to prove his qualities in these conditions also in Brussels.
As the second seed, Auger-Aliassime will await the winner of the match between Damir Dzumhur and Federico Cina in the second round of the tournament. Although his first match in Belgium doesn't look very scary, it might change for a potential quarter-final meeting.
Joao Fonseca is Auger-Aliassime's potential quarter-final opponent. The Brazilian teenager
controversially skipped the Shanghai Masters in favor of preparation for the indoor hard court season.
Fonseca will now need to prove that he made a decision, especially after two players ranked outside the Top 50 played the final in Shanghai, meaning he also could have had a chance for a career-changing result.
The 19-year-old will play against Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round, and his second-round opponent could be Pedro Martinez, who will play against one of the qualifiers. Fonseca is the seventh seed in Brussels.
There are three home players in the draw, but only one can make it to the quarter-finals. That's because they all landed in the same section of the draw. The eighth-seeded Zizou Bergs will play against compatriot Raphael Collignon in the first round.
The winner of this all-Belgian first-round clash can then play against David Goffin in the second round, but for another all-Belgian meeting to happen, Goffin will need to beat Francisco Comesana.
