The 2025 Almaty Open will be the second edition of the tournament in this city, and the draw has been unveiled.
There has been an ATP tournament held in Kazakhstan for half a decade now. In 2020, the Astana Open made its debut, and in 2022, it was even an ATP 500 tournament, with Novak Djokovic lifting the trophy after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
In 2024, the tournament moved from Astana to Almaty, where it will also be played in 2025. The event's previous venue was the Daulet National Tennis Centre in Astana, but in the past two seasons, it has been played at the Almaty Arena in Almaty.
Karen Khachanov won the inaugural edition of the tournament in Almaty, beating Gabriel Diallo in the final. Both of them will return to the event also in 2025, but in slightly different positions.
If Khachanov wants to win the title again, he will need to win only four matches. As a top seed, he has a bye in the first round, meaning he will start against the winner of the match between Jan-Lennard Struff and Mackenzie McDonald in round two.
Diallo, on the other hand, doesn't have a first-round bye, but he could have possibly wished for a better draw. The seventh seed will start against home wild card Amir Omarkhanov, who is a 17-year-old home player ranked outside the Top 1,000 on the ATP Tour. If Diallo beats Omarkhanov, he will then play against one of the qualifiers in the second round.
Daniil Medvedev, who is the second seed in Almaty, will be one of the top favorites to win the title. He previously struggled to play his best tennis, but since hiring Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he seems to be close to his best again.
The former world No. 1 player is the second seed in Almaty, and he already knows the nationality of his second-round opponent. Medvedev will take on the winner of an all-Australian match between Adam Walton and Tristan Schoolkate.
While the top two seeds in Almaty are both Russian, seeds No. 3 and No. 4 are both Italian. Flavio Cobolli is the third seed, and he will start against Nicolas Jarry or Timofey Skatov. Luciano Darderi is the No. 4 seed, beginning his journey in Almaty against Arthur Cazaux or Sihntaro Mochizuki.
There are many talented American players in the draw as well. Brandon Nakashima is the fifth seed. He will take on Hamad Medjedovic in the first round. Sixth-seeded Alex Michelsen, on the other hand, will play against another home wild card, Beibit Zhukayev.
