IBM in conjunction with the USTA will incorporate AI-generated audio commentary that will be available for the 2023 US Open across the tournament website and the official US Open app.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the jargon word of our time and it has meticulously worked its way into the sporting mechanics. In recent years, it has completely revolutionized line calling, player training and insight into their own games, and fan experience to unimaginable levels in tennis.
This latest move by the IBM and USTA is in line with what Wimbledon did a few months ago when it set precedence by introducing features like AI-generated commentary and the use of captions on their website and tournament app on the phone. It is designed to give fans a more insightful and enhanced digital experience.
IBM is the technology partner of the USTA for more than three decades and previously pioneered the use of AI at Wimbledon in 2017 offering real-time match reports and guiding fans around the grounds. But in 2023, they have now expanded their features and capabilities to include AI-generated commentary to video highlights and projected draw analysis of each player.
"Fans accessing the US Open digital experiences this year will be able to experience every singles match, across all seventeen courts, with detailed audio narration and captions accompanying each video – thanks to the power of IBM's watsonx generative AI, specifically trained on the language of tennis."
"The AI Commentary feature was developed based on the watsonx enterprise-ready data and AI platform, designed to enable businesses to accelerate generative AI work by leveraging foundation models and machine learning in one place, with their own data."
The new technology is powered by IBM’s watsonx AI platform which is built and trained in the 'language of tennis' with the aid of the USTA. In order to make the highlight reels informative and engaging, the AI models will operate across a hybrid cloud infrastructure.
Fans are able to experience this latest innovation by visiting the US Open website or the US Open mobile app.
