The opening Grand Slam of 2026 will occur at the 2026
Australian Open, and the
prize money and ranking points for
ATP and
WTA players have been made public.
There are several intriguing storylines to follow on the men's and women's side in Melbourne.
Jannik Sinner has an opportunity to win a third consecutive
Australian Open title, which would put his dominance at the event beyond doubt.
ATP world No. 1
Carlos Alcaraz is the most likely man to stop his rival. He will have extra motivation to complete the Career Grand Slam at the
Australian Open, and the Spaniard plans to get a tattoo if he secures that elusive final Major.
Although he has not won a Grand Slam in over two years,
Novak Djokovic's chances should never be ruled out. The tennis legend
withdrew from the 2026 Adelaide International to prioritize being ready for the Grand Slam he has won ten times.
On the women's side,
Aryna Sabalenka will attempt to reclaim the title she won in 2023 and 2024. The No. 1 seed in Australia narrowly missed out on a third consecutive success, losing 5-7 in the deciding set to Madison Keys.
Coco Gauff, who recently
lost the U.S. No. 1 ranking,
Iga Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova, Elena Rybakina, and Mirra Andreeva are among several players who are hoping to win their maiden
Australian Open title.
If the glory of becoming a Grand Slam singles champion was not enough motivation, the players will also compete for a higher prize purse this year. The tournament has committed a massive $111.5 million prize pool.
This year's
Australian Open men's and women's champions will receive A$4.15 million each. That is a 19% increase on the A$3.5 million awarded to Sinner and Keys almost 12 months ago. Each winner is also guaranteed 2,000 ranking points.
Both Tours also have the same ranking points, 1,300, for each runner-up. The losing finalist will also collect a huge A$2.15 million for getting that far, which is a 13% improvement on what was given to Sabalenka and Alexander Zverev.
Ranking points differ slightly from the semifinals. The men's semifinalists will receive 800 ranking points compared to the women's 780 points, but the
prize money remains the same for each at A$1.25 million.
From the quarterfinals until the round of 64, the
WTA players get more points. Female quarterfinalists will walk away from Melbourne with 430 points, 30 better than the men's 400. The men and women will get A$750,000 added to their bank accounts.
Those who reach the fourth round without going further are guaranteed A$480,000. The ranking points are split between the men and women from 240 to 200, with the
WTA players receiving the higher amount.
Progressing to the third round and then losing will be enough for players to earn A$327,750.
WTA players will also have 130 points added to their totals, while it is 100 for the men in the draw.
Being eliminated in the round of 64 will give the women 70 points compared to 50 for the men. Both sets of players will collect the same financial reward of A$225,000. The opening-round losers from both Tours will receive identical A$150,000 and 10 points.
