Daniil Medvedev wasn't particularly thrilled with some of the choices he made during the match against Novak Djokovic at the 2023 US Open.
The Russian took on Djokovic in the US Open final and proved no match for the now 24-time Grand Slam champion. It wasn't the best match from Medvedev, and nowhere near the level he showed against Alcaraz, which was disappointing for both him and the fans. The final was decent enough, but it wasn't that close of a match.
Medvedev didn't have many chances, but he had a few decent ones, especially in the second set. If he won that set, he might have been able to make the match more exciting, but ultimately, he lost in three sets, and that was that. Speaking after the match, Medvedev admitted to missing out on the second set due to his stubbornness.
Yeah, that's why also for sure pity that I didn't win the second set because I felt like I was let's call it all over him, like I was dominating in a way. Just should have done better. Was a little bit stubborn on return. I probably should have changed my position.
Medvedev particularly struggled with the serve and volley by Djokovic, losing most of those rallies. He didn't really change anything in his approach and regrets that choice because there were a few things he could have tried because his approach wasn't working.
I didn't manage to return well enough, and I don't want to say because of him. It was more of myself and I should have been less stubborn and go forward earlier in the match, because I only started doing it a little bit in the third set. But the match was a different story.
Nothing to do now but to learn from that and hopefully do better the next time around.
