Last year at the Australian Open, Stan Wawrinka lifted his hands in the air after the match for the last time, but that changed at the 2022 Italian Open as he triumphed for the first time in 15 months.

Stan Wawrinka won an ATP match for the first time in a year and 3 months when he defeated Reilly Opelka 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the 2022 Italian Open. The Swiss didn't have a good start to the match when he was losing already 3-6, 2-4, 40-AD. However, he showed all of his experience on the court in Rome to eventually win the match against the tall American.

As he hinted before the tournament, the ultimate goal in the 2022 season for Wawrinka might be finding out what his true level is, as he also admitted when he said:

"I'm super happy to be back. I think by the end of the year, I will know what I want to try to achieve before ending my career. Winning tournament is a special feeling in tennis because all your career, most of the weeks you play, you end up losing a match."

"Even if you go to the final, semi-final, and you are happy with the tournament, you need to accept that losing is part of the process. So it's always special to finish the week by winning a trophy."
