Coco Gauff's team underwent a major shake-up ahead of the 2025 US Open, as she parted ways with her coach.
During her still relatively short tennis career, Gauff has worked with a few coaches already. She isn't someone known for changing coaches frequently, but the young American strives to always improve, which is why she doesn't hesitate if she thinks some part of her game could be improved.
That's what she did in 2023 when she hired Brad Gilbert, and only a few weeks later, she lifted her maiden Grand Slam trophy at the US Open. She then parted ways with Gilbert in September 2024, hiring Matt Daly, who was hired to help Gauff with her serve and forehand, two of her main weaknesses. During that period, Daly worked alongside Jean-Christophe Faurel, who has spent multiple years with Gauff.
Although Daly came to help Gauff with her serve, she has massively struggled in that department in recent events. In Montreal, she produced 37 double faults in only two matches. Shortly after that, in Cincinnati, Gauff lost to Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals, producing 16 double faults during that loss.
With her serve clearly not improving, Gauff decided to part ways with Daly, despite winning the French Open together only a few weeks ago.
To replace Daly, Gauff hired Gavin MacMillan, who will work alongside Faurel. MacMillan has a history of helping tennis players with their serves, as he is the biomechanics expert who helped Aryna Sabalenka a few years ago when she massively struggled with double faults.
Jannik Sinner's coach, Darren Cahill, spoke about Gauff's decision for ESPN, saying the coach could really help the 21-year-old with the biomechanics of her serve.
"A lot of things add up, and this could be a really good relationship. He’s very thorough … I’ve spoken to him many, many times before, and the fact that he’s got experience with different athletes from different sports, both male and female, he uses the new technology, he goes to the video a lot, really breaks down the biomechanics."

Gauff will attempt to recreate 2023 magic after coaching shake-up

When Gauff last made a similar decision, she went on to have the best few weeks of her tennis career. She won the title in Washington, reached the quarter-finals in Montreal, and won the titles in Cincinnati and at the US Open.
It would be unreasonable to expect MacMillan to do wonders in such a short period, but every time Gauff changed a coach, she went on a winning streak. She won the title at the China Open in Beijing in 2024 after hiring Daly.
Sometimes, a coaching change might not be about some immediate impact, but instead a change that might spark some inspiration, and Gauff will be hoping the magic of her coaching changes will work at the US Open this year.
