Former player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga believes that Novak Djokovic is not only the greatest of all time but will actually finish with up to 28 Grand Slam trophies.
The careers of Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are historically linked, of course, because it was Tsonga who stood opposite of Djokovic when the Serbian won his maiden Grand Slam trophy in 2008.
It was a full three years before Djokovic would win a second Grand Slam trophy, but it was deserved. Both played a fabulous event to get to the final as Djokovic bested Roger Federer in the semi-final while Tsonga took care of Rafael Nadal.
In the final of that Australian Open, Djokovic prevailed in four sets to win his first Grand Slam. The Serbian was never expected to become as great as he ended up being.
It was pretty clear early on that he would be a great player, but it took him a long time to win a second and then the rest. He's up to 24 right now, which is just crazy, no matter how much you think about it.
It's why many consider him the greatest player of all time and claiming anything else looks more ridiculous with every year. For Tsonga, the debate is long over; he's backing Djokovic as the GOAT, and that's not all.
In an interview with the Le Republicain Lorrain, Tsonga predicted Djokovic would actually end up with up to 28 Grand Slams, which would definitely end the debate.
The GOAT is Djokovic. And I think he can go for 25, 26, 27… Maybe 28 Grand Slam titles. You never know.
We'll see what happens, but number 25 might not be far away as the Australian Open inches closer. Djokovic is the defending champion, having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final, and few think the 2024 edition would go any different.
