ATP Race Update: Alcaraz Moves Into Top Three And Chases Leader Sinner

by Nurein Ahmed

Carlos Alcaraz made a substantial leap into the top three of the ATP race and has reduced the gap to leader Jannik Sinner thanks to his first Roland Garros title win.

Sinner set the early pace when he won his first Grand Slam at the 2024 Australian Open, amassing 2000 points. Since then, he has won titles in Rotterdam and Miami to steadily establish a big gap at the top.

But after the conclusion of the French Open, in which Alcaraz defeated Sinner in a decisive semifinal, the Spaniard cut his lead by winning the tournament. He now sits on 3900 points, a gap of 1400 from the Italian.

Alexander Zverev is sandwiched between the pair in second place. He was the runner-up at Roland Garros and now has 4385 points, putting him close to Sinner.

Casper Ruud, who lost in the semifinals at the clay major, is fourth, ahead of Daniil Medvedev. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex de Minaur, and Andrey Rublev occupy the remaining spots in the top eight.

The ATP race will determine the eight best players who will qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin. The race will also be used to crown the world's best player at the end of the season, also known as the year-end ATP No. 1.

Grigor Dimitrov is in ninth place, while Novak Djokovic has re-entered the Top 10. The Serbian's title defense in Paris came to a premature end when a knee injury forced him to pull out from the tournament before his quarterfinal match.

Djokovic is facing the prospect of missing out on the ATP Finals spot for the first time since 2017. That year, an elbow injury prevented him from competing after he shut down his season because of an elbow injury. This time, he has undergone surgery and is expected to miss only a few weeks.

Taylor Fritz, in 11th, is another player who could lose ground in the race in the coming weeks as he is nursing a back injury. The likes of Hubert Hurkacz, Holger Rune, and Tommy Paul can all eclipse him.
