When Nick Kyrgios was going through a tough period in his life, it was Andy Murray who made sure to check in on the Australian.
It has been a well-known fact for a long time now that Andy Murray and Nick Kyrgios have struck up quite a friendship while competing on the ATP Tour, sometimes even against each other.
However unexpected it may be on paper, the pair are often the first ones to back each other up when things get tough on tour. And that could not have been more true for earlier this season when Kyrgios admitted to going through a tough period of his life.
It was, in fact, the Australian's mother who revealed exactly how much the Scot cares about the one-time Wimbledon finalist when she spoke about their relationship in an exclusive interview with 9News.
Speaking on what her son was going through, Norlaila Kyrgios explained how Nick was reluctant to speak about what he was going through.
“I asked him about it and he didn’t want to talk about it at that time. John spoke to me that Andy is worried about Nick because he can see some evidence of self-harm."
"I blame others for that. For just pressuring him, criticising him. Even people we thought might be supporting him."
Going on to explain how challenging the period was for her as the player's mother, Norlaila said it was painful to see what her son was going through, especially since she's not often able to see him.
"That period was very hard. I just wanted to be next to him constantly so that I could see him. If I could see him I know he’s okay. And if I can’t see him I worry about him so much that it becomes very difficult."
