2024 Japan Open Tokyo ATP Entry List - Ruud, Tsitsipas, Shelton & More

The 2024 Japan Open will run from September 25th to October 1st and the entry list has been revealed.

First founded in 1915, this is considered one of the oldest tournaments in professional tennis. It has existed each year since the ATP's formation half a century ago (except 2020-2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic).

Some of the greatest men's tennis champions have won the Japan Open title at the lavishly built Ariake Coliseum. These include John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Stefan Edberg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Last year, Ben Shelton etched his name in the Roll of Honor list after defeating Aslan Karatsev to win his first ATP title. After that triumph, he also made his Top 15 debut.

This is an ATP 500-level tournament scheduled to take place during the Asian swing. Players will use the Japan Open in Tokyo to fine-tune their game before the Shanghai Masters.

The Japan Open will run in the same week as another ATP 500 event in Beijing, China. The entry list for the 2024 edition has already generated excitement and anticipation, with three of the world's Top 10 players confirming their presence.

If there are no major changes in the rankings by then, the top seed is expected to be Hubert Hurkacz. The Pole has not done so well at this tournament, losing in the first round in each of his last two main draw appearances, including last year.

Hurkacz's title defense in Shanghai is approaching, so he will need to rack up some points in Tokyo. These could be valuable in keeping his spot in the Top 10 after the eighth Masters 1000 tournament of the season.

Casper Ruud and Alex De Minaur also underperformed while playing in Tokyo last year and will want to atone for that mishap. Stefanos Tsitsipas will play the Japan Open for the first time since 2018.

The 26-year-old Greek remains without a title on the hard courts this season and crashed out of the US Open first-round stage. Behind him is a trip of Americans who can overtake him in the rankings.

Taylor Fritz, 2022 champion, is joined by defending champion Shelton and Tommy Paul. Denmark's Holger Rune is expected to be among the seeds, but he is another player struggling with his form after a disappointing early exit in New York.

Frances Tiafoe is a former finalist at this tournament, so he knows what it takes to win on this surface and in these conditions. A handful of big hitters will be in the draw, including rising British star Jack Draper, Montreal champion Alexei Popyrin, and Chile's Alejandro Tabilo.

This tournament is expected to mark Marin Cilic's return to competition on the ATP Tour. The former US Open champion has not played since early February and will use a protected ranking to enter the main draw.

At least four players will receive main draw wild cards, with an additional four expected to navigate the qualifying tournament. The initial entry list for the 2024 Japan Open in Tokyo can be seen below.
