The Bucharest Open is one of the newest additions to the 2024 ATP calendar, and the draw for the event has been released.
This is an ATP 250 tournament that will be held on outdoor clay courts from April 15th to 21st and will feature a slew of talented players and veterans, including a former Grand Slam champion.
The major news before the draw ceremony was France's Gael Monfils's withdrawal. At the same time, the tournament offered a wild card to Brazilian teen prodigy Joao Fonseca.
The field is composed of 28 players, including eight seeds. The top four seeds will each receive a bye in the first round. That means Francisco Cerundolo (top seed), Sebastian Korda, Alejandro Tabilo, and Tallon Griekspoor will kick off their campaigns in midweek.
Cerundolo and Korda occupy the top half of the draw and could meet in the semifinal. The Argentine awaits the winner of the match between Richard Gasquet (wild card) and Federico Coria to start his Bucharest journey.
Korda, meanwhile, will face either Thanasi Kokkinakis or a qualifier in his first match. Hugo Gaston will battle compatriot Arthur Rinderknech, with the winner getting a second-round draw against fourth seed Alejandro Tabilo.
As for Griekspoor, he will face either Marton Fucsovics or a qualifier. The presence of Stan Wawrinka adds star power to the field. The Swiss one-hander has a tough opening match against Portugal's No. 1 Nuno Borges.
Denis Shapovalov, a wild card entrant, will play fellow lefty Corentin Moutet. Joao Fonseca will look to emulate his exploits from Rio when he takes on Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. Another Brazil-Italy confrontation pits Thiago Seyboth Wild against Novak Djokovic's Indian Wells conqueror Luca Nardi.
Cordoba champion Luciano Darderi is a player to watch this week. He faces Argentina's Mariano Navone, whom he defeated during the Golden Swing. Be sure to check the entire draw for this tournament below.
