The Golden Swing oscillates to Buenos Aires, where the 2024 Argentina Open begins, and the draw for the tournament has been revealed.
With all the top eight seeds at the event ranked in the world's Top 40, the prospect of seeing high-quality matches from the opening day is very high.
That also means none of the top-ranked players will feel safe, especially having to adjust from the month-long summer of hard-court tennis in Australia to the clay in South America. The major star attraction in Buenos Aires from February 12th to 18th will be defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
But with a title drought stretching over six months, the Spaniard appears vulnerable. Nevertheless, he is still the favorite. The top four seeds in the tournament receive a bye, which means Alcaraz, Cameron Norrie, Nicolas Jarry, and Francisco Cerundolo will start their campaign in round two.
Alcaraz will likely draw Peruvian clay court specialist Juan Pablo Varillas, who is expected to topple a qualifier in his opening match. The Spaniard faces a potential banana peel against seventh seed Laslo Djere in the quarters.
However, the Serbian man could have his hands full as he begins his adventure in Buenos Aires against wild card Marin Cilic. If Djere survives that, he will most likely need to beat Thiago Seyboth Wild in the second round.
The projected semifinal in the top half is Alcaraz facing Jarry. But the Chilean has been in dire form coming to Argentina and has a tough draw. He awaits the winner of the match between Pedro Cachin and Stan Wawrinka.
And the possibility of Jarry playing Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the quarterfinal is very high. So the man from Santiago could run into a stumbling block.
In the bottom half, Cameron Norrie and Francisco Cerundolo both face some testing rounds. Norrie will play one of Sebastian Ofner or Federico Coria, with fifth seed Sebastian Baez, a potential quarterfinal opponent.
