In 2022, the ATP Finals will be played in Turin for the second consecutive time as the year-end event will be held for the 53rd time.
Every year, eight highest-ranked singles players and eight doubles teams qualify for the ATP Finals. This year, it will be held in Pala Alpitour from November 13th until 20th as Alexander Zverev is the defending champion in singles, and the French team Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut are defending champions in doubles.
However, very rarely, the 2022 ATP Finals will be held without defending champions in both singles and doubles. Alexander Zverev is struggling with an injury that may keep him away from the tennis courts also in 2023.
On the other hand, the French doubles pair played only a few matches together this season and so they certainly won't qualify for the event.
In singles, Rafael Nadal became the first player to qualify for the 2022 ATP Finals. Later, he was joined by fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who was set to make his first appearance.
However, a few days before the event started, he was forced to withdraw because of an injury and replaced by the first alternate, Taylor Fritz. A few weeks later, Casper Ruud became the third player to clinch his spot in the season finale, and the 2019 champion, Stefanos Tsitsipas, joined the Norwegian shortly after.
After winning the 2022 Astana Open, Novak Djokovic also sealed his spot as the Serbian won Wimbledon this year, and therefore, it was enough for him to finish in the Top 20 of the 2022 ATP Race Rankings.
Later, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Felix Auger-Aliassime completed the final eight with their solid performances in the last few events of the year.
In doubles, Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupsi played two Grand Slam quarterfinals and one final and that guaranteed them a spot. Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury were the most dominant team of the season as they played quarterfinals at Roland Garros, semifinals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and won the US Open.
The 2022 Roland Garros champions Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer also qualified for the event. The Australian Open champions Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis also qualified for the event thanks to winning a Grand Slam title, and the same conditions apply to Novak Djokovic, who won Wimbledon.
